The official book launch of “Follow the Flag” Colonial horses at the Boer War, will be held at the Laycock Theatre at 11am on the 5th May (Thursday)

Little is known about the colonial horses used in the Boer War.

This new book documents stories gleaned from old records, letters and other archives. It contains many rare photos, poems and drawings.

Never before had our Waler horses and their companions been exposed to a war such as this. It was the beginning of so many aspects of animal welfare. It paved the way for veterinary services, field hospitals, remount depots and the shipping of animals during wartime conditions.  It was to have a strong bearing on their welfare in World War One.

THIS BOOK IS AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO OUR WARTIME ANIMAL HISTORY
